Piloting Socio-Technical Innovation

چکیده
Anyone familiar with the German IS research culture would expect to find numerous action researchers in Germany. However, a closer examination of the literature reveals there are relatively few if any. There are few publications claiming to report on action research and there is little if any ongoing debate on action research. This paper argues that the lack of publications is a result of a different framing of action oriented research in Germany. The purpose of this paper is to use a variant of action research, the piloting of an innovation, as a starting point for a debate on the action research methodology in Germany and to contribute to the international debate on action research. We do so in a general manner and by reflection on the research approach in the socio-technical pilot project Cuparla. متن کاملMobile ICTs in Government Field Operations: A Socio-Technical Innovation Project
The authors investigated the unfolding of an innovation project in field operations of City government, which introduced mobile information and communication technologies (ICTs) for field crews. The implementation of mobile technology had to overcome several serious socio-technical challenges, the lessons learned from which were instrumental for the project’s ultimate success. The authors colle...
متن کاملFrom sectoral systems of innovation to socio-technical systems : Insights about dynamics and change from sociology and institutional theory
In the last decade ‘sectoral systems of innovation’ have emerged as a new approach in innovation studies. This article makes four contributions to the approach by addressing some open issues. The first contribution is to explicitly incorporate the user side in the analysis. Hence, the unit of analysis is widened from sectoral systems of innovation to socio-technical systems. The second contribu...

Recent advances in medical imaging, information and communication technology promise to support medical visual practice as well as everyday healthcare experience. However, this potential is not easy to realize. A better understanding of existing practices can inform socio-technical innovation. We draw on ethnographic observations and our involvement in the design of 'palpable computing' to exam...
متن کاملAn Australian Hospital Scenario
In the early 2000s, Information Systems researchers in Australia had begun to emphasise socio-technical approaches in innovation adoption of technologies. The ‘essentialist’ approaches to adoption (for example, Innovation Diffusion or TAM), suggest an essence is largely responsible for rate of adoption (Tatnall, 2011) or a new technology introduced may spark innovation. The socio-technical fact...
